Painting Pansies with Complementary Colors

One of the flowers that bloom in January is pansies. There are a lot of color combinations of pansies, but the most eye-catching for me is the combination of yellow and purple pansies. Why? Yellow and purple or violet rather are complementary colors.

It means that the yellow and violet are on opposite sides of the color wheel.

Just like red and green, those two color combinations are very popular during the Christmas season.

When two complementary colors are mixed, it can create a neutral color that can be grey or brown. In the pansies watercolor tutorial, I showed I painted with the step-by-step process and voice-over. The yellow and the purple met on the paper, without creating a muddy color like brown or grey.

How? Wet-on-wet technique. With the wet-on-wet technique, it is easier to make changes when you make a mistake, and lift colors. Painting using the wet-on-wet technique helps the colors have a smooth transition. Even if the colors are complementary (or colors on opposite sides on the color wheel) the yellow and the purple didn’t create brown or grey.
